Over 100 competitors competed in the first triathlon ever to be held in the seaside village of Fenit in Co Kerry. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side for the event and torrential rain threatened to dampen the spirit of the event. However spectators, volunteers and of course the competitors made the event a great success on the day.
In Kerry, Fenit is known for being a great place to swim, but on Saturday the high swells and high winds made the swim a very difficult task for all competitors. The RNLI were on hand to direct all competitors through the course. Mike Yelverton from Limerick Tri Club was first out of the water and never lost his lead and went on to win in a time of 1hr and 2 mins. Ailbhe Carroll from Nenagh Tri club was the first female out of the water but Aoife o Connor from Phoenix tri Club had a fantastic run and came home first with a time of 1hr and 12 mins. Heasman/McElligott came home as the first relay in a time of 1hr and 19 mins with Bernard McElligott putting in a very good time in both the cycle and the run to win it for the team.
Despite the bad weather the event proved to be a great success and plans are already underway to make it a better and bigger event for next year.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank first of all you the competitors for competing in the inaugural Navigator Triathlon 2010. I would especially like to thank all the first time triathletes for making this there first event.
This event would not have taken place without the help of a number of people. I cannot thank everyone enough but a special thanks to JP Brick and John Morierty of the RNLI, Mike o Neill and Liam Doyle from the Fenit development association, Dermot Crowley from the Fenit Harbour Board, Jason Harte from an Garda Siochana, Liam Marley from St Brendan's AC and finally Judy Lynch for doing a great job with the BBQ. I would like to thank every single steward that stayed out in the rain and encouraged all the competitors through the course.
Finally myself and annie would like to thank our small team for going way above the call of duty - Kathleen, Jerome, Jonathon, Kate, Tom, and of course Kathleen's mom - THANK YOU
